Statoil:
pushing the limits further
"The
difference between this station and our others is
that we have taken even greater consideration of
the environment instead of being satisfied with
compliance to established norms. Aside from all
the technical solutions we have, for example, replaced
standard shop fittings with materials like MDF-board,
recycled cardboard and raw steel. At the same time
we have done our best to eliminate the use of PVC
in the shop," says Statoil's station manager Thomas
Zackrisson. "We have a larger selection of environmentally-labelled
products than is normal but we don't try to tell
our customers what they should buy. Nonetheless,
there is at least one environmentally-labelled alternative
in the majority of product groups". "We have alternative
fuels as well. E85 for ethanol powered cars and
E5, that consists of 5 percent ethanol, which is
a fuel that all cars can run on. The E5 environmental
fuel is in the same price class as petrol but it
has a lower environmental impact. Even our diesel,
Statoil Class 1 Bio, which contains 2 percent RME
is environmentally classified."
Statoil
also contributes to reducing packaging by selling
windscreen washer fluid in bulk. There are a number
of sorting alternatives for waste and a mill for
plastic that cuts packaging waste volume by 90 percent.
Furthermore, Statoil is testing 100 percent recirculation
of water from the car wash. The authorities demand
80 percent. If the station was to be moved sometime
in the future there will be no residual damage to
the environment because the ground is protected
by a subterranean rubbermat that collects any oil
that might be spilled.
